Thomas Pryor, Yorkville author and historian, (I Hate the Dallas Cowboys ~ tales of a scrappy New York boyhood) presents: "The Beatles White Album" a Stoops to Nuts production. The double Lp with 30 songs came out Thanksgiving week 1968 ($5.99 at Alexanders on Lex and 59th).  My fourteen year old life at home, school and in the street was a mess. That record took me through a dark period. We'll flexibly explore it's influence with stories, songs, drinks, and showcase three terrific new records, The Human Comedy, Silent Moon and Bewitching Me: The Lyrics of Yip Harburg.

Countless walk-up tenement buildings between 72nd Street and 96th Street are coming down as the Second Avenue subway speculation drives developers to assemble sites, destroying Yorkville's unique and historic character and take away precious street light.
Colin Dempsey & Daniela Schiller

One way to keep the memories alive is to talk about them, and I'm taking photos of every local building that is part of planned and current demolition in our area. Stoops to Nuts will continue to bring the history of the neighborhood to life in pictures, words and humor until I kick the bucket.

Thank you, to The New York Times for choosing "Yorkville: Stoops to Nuts," and listing it on your Blog Roll for eight years. We will continue to keep the old NYT City Section alive.

Thank you Ryan's Daughter, Jim, Mick, Walter, for letting us play in your attic. hugs, Tommy, and the three Ryan daughters from  86th & York, my mother, Patty Ryan and her two sisters, Joan Ryan and Barbara Ryan.

Stoops to Nuts Warms Cornelia Street

When you say an event is the best ever, right after the event happened doubt slips in.  You don't purposely try to knock it down, what you are doing is hoping down the road the best thing ever hasn't happened to you yet.

Well, I don't care, here I go:  Last night's "City Stories: Stoops to Nuts" show at Cornelia Street Cafe was the most exciting storytelling show ever.  The Cafe was electric.  From my seat, I saw a attentive full house totally engaged in each artist's performance. We heard tales and songs of redemption, family strife, a mother asking her kid "for a little help here;"the best Christmas ever,  reflections on a grandmother's and great aunt's unconditional love, and a story about stepping back from a family and seeing their capacity to walk into an asylum as a group and immediately getting a suite.

Thank you, Barbara Aliprantis, Nicole Ferraro, Robin Hirsch, Jim Hawkins, Amanda Thorpe and Adam Wade.  Your audience was deeply moved by your work last night. Your stories and songs lifted spirits and charmed hearts.  Thank you, Steve Northeast and Natalie for making us feel at home.  Thank you, Angelo Verga and Josh Rebell for inviting us to play and that we did.

Here are photos from the show and pictures of the surrounding West Village neighborhood.

Our next "City Stories: Stoops to Nuts" show is Tuesday, January 8th @ 6pm.

Madison Square - Under the Influence

Walking through the Madison Square and Flatiron neighborhoods in sandals and a tee shirt on a December night, very strange indeed. Freaky warm weather did not stop the holiday lights from performing their civic duties. Saw a soldier watching over a tree lighting ceremony; an insurance building reflected off glass on south side of 23rd Street; the Flatiron building dividing the roadbeds of Fifth Avenue and Broadway; a crowd under a canopy of lights from the surrounding office windows; and time screened at twilight.

Special guest, James Hawkins, straight from his four year gig at Power Memorial has a dandy seasonal yarn.

Walking On The Moon

A windy afternoon, I ran along the Hudson wall, too chilly to walk I kept moving along, just stopping to take in the furious sunset burning its heatless light off the Manhattan side of the river. Alone, I walked on the moon. A brief epiphany. I left when I couldn't feel my numb finger on the shutter button of my camera.
