Thomas Pryor is a writer, a photographer, and a lesson in new beginnings. He began publishing his essays at age 49, in 2003, and has since had several stories published in the "New York Times" in addition to many other outlets. His reconnection to his writing led also to a reconnection with photography—and Pryor began to re-embrace the bicycle rides he had taken with his father and the photos his father took during those times.
A native New Yorker, Pryor rode with his dad from the East River to the Hudson, north and south, observing the city from all angles and in all seasons. Now, Pryor rides his bicycle with his own camera ready. The results of these rides make up this dynamic exhibit.
The work is lovely and the display strong, with just one potential logistical wrinkle: The photos are on walls of the restaurant that are right next to tables—so if those tables are occupied by diners, you'll have a harder time looking at the work. Best to go at a less popular meal time; or, for that matter, plan to have a meal in that room yourself, which will ease the way to viewing.
Some beautiful examples: "Casey Strolling Poet's Walk" (a charming dog traveling down the Central Park lane); "Bay Ridge Sunset on the Bay"; "Plaza Hotel Fountain" (shot from below and framed by trees); "Yorkville Sunset" (with fire escape ladders in silhouette); and "Roosevelt Island Tram" (shot at dusk). I also loved a shot of the Lincoln Center fountain with admirers around it, but I could not get close enough to it (due to diners) to see what Pryor calls that one.
