Time Out Magazine Recommends "Stoops to Nuts" Tonight @ Cornelia St. Cafe

Time Out Magazine recommends tonight's "City Stories: Stoops to Nuts."

Please come down to Cornelia Street Cafe @ 6pm to enjoy a great show with these artists: Alex DeSuze, Sherryl Marshall, Daniela Schiller and Mickey Wyte. Admission is $8, and includes a free drink.

My photography exhibition "New York Scenes from a Bicycle" is on view upstairs at the Cafe. It runs through the end of March. All the framed work is for sale, and copies of my book "River to River: New York Scenes from a Bicycle" are available for purchase ($12).

I'm having shoulder surgery tomorrow. Anticipating a long recovery, I took many photos this past week: at the Losers Lounge Cat Stevens vs. James Taylor shows at Joe's Pub, in Greenwich Village, Yorkville and down Carl Schurz Park with Sophie the puppy running the Hockey Field.  If you are on Facebook you can view my public albums.

I may lay low for a time after the surgery but I will be back with new stories and photos soon.

"New York Scenes from a Bicycle" - Photos from the Reception

Thomas R. Pryor at exhibit - photo by Anthony Piscitiello
"New York Scenes from a Bicycle," opened with love and lots of friends, old and new at Cornelia Street Cafe Tuesday night.  Last week on the First Avenue Select bus, I met a woman with short hair listening to her iPod, I told her a St. Stephen's grammar school story between the U.N. stop and 79th Street, and asked her to stop by Tuesday. She did, brought a friend and purchased  "Yorkville Sunset."

The day before the show headed uptown on the 7th IRT subway, I scooted over to give a woman with a killer smile room to sit. When she did I asked her would she mind reading my artist statement. She took her time, laughed twice, and came to the opening at Cornelia Street with a friend. Her friend bought, "Bay Ridge Sunset Over the Bay."

Four strangers becoming new friends in one week, pretty cool.

This morning viewing my buddy, Phillip Gambri's terrific photos from Cornelia, I counted 102 people in the space. Thank you, everybody for your support. I was touched. And folks bought stuff. I sold nine frames, 34 books and three prints.

Robin Hirsch, Angelo Verga, Melissa Perez-Halley, Josh Rebell, Steve Northeast, Nick, Mike and the entire staff at Cornelia Street Cafe, thank you, for a sweet night I'll never forget and this wonderful opportunity.

Thank you, Laura Thompson, Amanda Thorpe, Jon Calvert, Peter Calvert, Michele Pryor, Stef Uddo, Anne Pechstein, Casey Pechstein and Jane Moss for encouraging my work, helping me put the show together and never letting me down.

Thank you, Gordon Balkcom, for being my friend, promoting my work, and always seeking new opportunities for me.

Thank you, Phillip Giambri and Anthony Piscitiello for all the photos here.

All the work in the exhibit is for sale.  Purchase directly through me at tommy.pryor@gmail.com or call me at 917-648-2414.  Also, the Café Host will accept your check or cash to reserve the framed photo when the exhibit ends March 31st. You can purchase prints of any photo in the exhibit through my photo gallery at thomasrpryor.photoshelter.com or through “Yorkville: Stoops to Nuts,” home page.  Print sizes and prices are listed.  If you are interested in other photos of mine you see in my book, at my blog, or on Facebook, I will fill your order.

“River to River: New York Scenes from a Bicycle,” my first book is available for sale here at the Café for $12. Please ask the Café’s Host for assistance and browse through a copy at the Host Stand if you like. You can also order the book through Amazon books online, or YBK Publishers.

I’m in the middle of my second childhood, photographing and writing stories about our changing beautiful City, merging the old with the new.  My stories and photographs have been published The New York Times, A Prairie Home Companion and other periodicals.  I’ve told my tales on NBC TV, public radio’s “This American Life” and Channel 13’s “Baseball: A New York Love Story.” If you enjoy storytelling and narrative songsmiths, please join us at our monthly “City Stories: Stoops to Nuts” show every second Tuesday @ 6pm downstairs at the Café.  The New York Daily News, Time Out Magazine and CBS News highly recommend, “Stoops to Nuts.”

New York Press "Pick of the Week" - Tonight's "New York Scenes from a Bicycle" @ Cornelia Street Cafe

Fifth Avenue Upside Down
Our Town Downtown/New York Press made tonight's "New York Scenes from a Bicycle" opening reception at Cornelia Street Cafe a "Don't Miss  ~ Pick of the Week."

Here are six of my favorite photos from the show. The fifth one down is a Christmas Day 1960 photo taken by my father, Robert Pryor. The location: east side of  York Avenue in front of the Old Timers' Tavern. Pictured: my cousin, Bob Pryor, my brother, Rory, me and my first two wheeler.  My interest in photography started a few months later when Dad and I started touring Manhattan by bike. Dad brought his Yashica 44 each time. I own a thousand of those photos from long ago.

Hope to see you tonight under the candy striped awning at 29 Cornelia Street.

"River to River: New York Scenes from a Bicycle" my book of photography will be on sale for $12 at the Cafe during the show's two month run.

Thomas R. Pryor is inviting you to view “New York Scenes From a Bicycle”, a photo exhibit taken from Pryor’s own experiences. Ride with Pryor (and his father) past streetscapes and skylines of years passed dating back to the 1960s. You will be sure to find a masterful blend of love, memory and passion in each photo.

New York Scenes from a Bicycle - Two Days Away

Tommy, Pop Ryan and Rory in Yorkville on Christmas Day 1960
Pop Ryan , Rory and I met on 83rd Street in Yorkville and agreed: we don't like the Ravens or the 49ers so tonight we're working on our mock New York Giant college draft and arguing over our favorite photo in the "New York Scenes from a Bicycle," photo exhibition opening at Cornelia Street Cafe in two days, Tuesday, February 5th @ 5:30pm.

Peter Calvert
Here are photos from the frame hanging party at the Cafe this past Friday morning and three photos from the show: "Coney Island Baby," "Vinny Dreaming" and "Harry Potter Meets the King of Central Park."  Thank you, Melissa Perez-Halley, Laura Thompson and Peter Calvert for getting up early to make it happen. Everything looks great. Thank you, Robin Hirsch, Angelo Verga, Josh Rebell and Melissa Perez-Halley for inviting me to do the show. Thank you, Otto Barz, and YBK Publishers for releasing my first book of photography, "River to River: New York Scenes from a Bicycle."

Hope to see you at the Cafe on Tuesday, if not, it's a two month show (ends March 31st). Drop by the candy striped awning front at 29 Cornelia Street in the West Village, enjoy the fine food and drink while you view the scenes I record when I tour this beautiful city on my bicycle.

"River to River: New Scenes from a Bicycle" (YBK Publishers) will be sold at the Cafe for $12 during the show's run or buy it at Amazon books online.
