An Indian Summer Dog Strike

Long Beach Island September 2010 on an Indian summer day, a human goes for a bike ride and takes his dog along for a run.

It's in the high 80s with dripping humidity. A mile into the event dog sees large puddle, plops down, refuses to move.

Human dismounts and begins negotiation. Dog's deaf to sweet talk. Rubs belly across the refreshing pond. A block ahead human sees a stand-off solution. Persuades dog relief is near. Dog rises and they walk towards the curb-pride man watering his lawn. Like a silent movie, no words are passed. Human nods at hose guy. He nods back and aims an arc of rushing cool liquid at the hairy dog. Dog doesn't move. Dog is pleased.

Postcards From Ten Mile River ~ John Harvey Remembers When

Thank you, John Harvey, for taking the Yorkville radio listeners back to 1910 Brooklyn and Queens Village in the 1960s. Your grandfather's letters to the Daily News were crisp photos triggering memories for people, places and things past.

Here are a few postcards from my time at Ten Mile River when I was a Boy Scout and visited the reservation in Narrowsburg, New York.

John Harvey, a Ten Mile River alumni, said he earned his One Mile Swim merit badge while the guy trailing him in the canoe who was suppose to protect him, kept hitting him in the head with an oar.

Wish You Were Here!

"Wish You Were Here!"

Postcards functioned as the telephone, internet, Facebook and Twitter in the late 1800s & early 1900s.

This is the lead topic on this week's Yorkville: Stoops to Nuts radio show.

My guest Tuesday night @ 9pm, John Harvey, is the author of a terrific historical postcard book of Maplewood, New Jersey. John's an avid collector of postcards from all eras and all places. His grandfather, a Park Sloper, was a regular contributor to the New York Daily News and Brooklyn Eagle's "Remember When?" columns. We'll be reading Pop's turn of the century reminisces.

John and I will explore a few of the postcards and share with you telling messages that said so much more than the few words the small blank box on the postcard allowed.

John and I have a long history together as curious seekers of messages and meanings from New York City's & the general Metropolitan area's past. John is a dedicated civic leader, an amazing teacher, and an excellent leadership & career transition coach. John coaches the up and coming Seton Hall Rugby team, "The Pirates."

Tune in, we will tickle your memories. Tom Waits approves!
