Losers Lounge Lou Reed Tribute ~ East Side Story ~ a NYPL Oral History Project

Great show last night, The Losers Lounge tribute to Lou Reed at Joe's Pub. Losers, the once and future champ bang for your buck in NYC entertainment. They always leave you smiling. Even Lou smiled last night. And ask Laurie, he hardly ever smiles. Even on his birthday.

Here are more photos.

Starting March 30th, I'm working with the New York Public Library's Neighborhood Oral History Project, "Upper East Side Story." Details on this project in the next few days. If you lived on the East Side between 59th St. & 96th St. for 25 or more years (the longer the better) and you would like me to interview you about your history in the neighborhood, please email me at tommy.pryor@gmail.com. An easy conversation where I listen to you talk about where you came from. Your recollections will become part of the permanent record at NYPL, available for the public to hear.

Losers Lounge ~ My Dream Talent Show

After a touching performance at The Losers Lounge final Pretenders vs. Blondie show at Joe's Pub, here is Nick Danger's suit on its way home, waiting for the #6 at Astor Place.

Below, Nick in the suit at the final show this past March. When Mr. Danger left the stage and took off the suit, the suit said, "Hasta Luego!" and scooted like a screaming mimi out to Lafayette Street and tore a path to the subway kiosk.

There are many reasons, I love the Losers Lounge. But I think I've come up with the primary sensation I'm feeling before, during and after the show.

At St. Stephen's grammar school in the 1960s we had the shittiest talent shows in the history of the New York Archdiocese. For an unbeknownst reason, the nuns at St. Stephen of Hungary's school and certain mothers were compelled to put on a talent show every year, despite the fact, there was no talent in the student body, that is, if you discounted the Reinwald Brothers' dueling accordions act. Nobody wanted to follow John and Joe. In second grade, Mrs. Ottes, the show's producer and our nun, Sister Lorraine, took advantage of our recent First Communion by having the boys and girls perform a waltz in our blue suits and white communion dresses. Did you ever see me dance? I begged my parents to stay home. Faked sick that day, triggering a kick in the ass from my mother.

If you were in the audience during the talent show, nuns paced around and if you were goofing off, they smacked you in the head. If you did it again, the lady in black pulled you by your ear out of the place. They did this even if your parents were there watching your brother on stage. More the reason I'd be goofing off. So disruptive activity in the auditorium required crafty timing for your assaults. And they wanted us to sit still for the crap on stage. When a nun was targeting me with her eyes, I had this thought in my ten year old head, "When I grow up, I'll see what I want, when I want, and if it stinks, I'll walk out."

When I enter the lobby for a  Losers Lounge show, I think about my promise to myself as a boy, I'm where I want to be, seeing terrific performers that keep me in my seat (excepting one number one run) for two hours of musical and theatrical pleasure. The Losers Lounge is the talent show I was hoping for in the 1960s. Everybody's better than the Reinwald brothers, playing and singing music I love. Audience participation is high, and even though I still duck and flinch over anything, when I look around the room I see no Sisters of Divine Charity. We're nun free! And the Losers Lounge artists pop on each song like a soda can when you give it a sneaky shake and pass it to a ball-busting friend to open.

This is the show I wanted as a boy. How lucky can I get?

If you never seen The Losers Lounge get going and bring a kid. We need to pass this important information on.

Here's a link to an album of shots from the first Pretenders vs. Blondie show and a link to pictures from the late Saturday show this past March.

Don't Be a Ninny, Be a Loser

The Losers Lounge has inspired my writing since 1999. It took four years to write my first story and then I couldn't stop. Each show rich tales are laid out in song. If you want a creative push see the The Losers Lounge at Joe's Pub. Here is a photo album from Thursday night's Elvis Presley show.

Founded by Joe McGinty and Nick Danger in 1993 at the Pink Pony, the revue grew into a musical force when it merged with the Kustard Kings led by David Terhune (David formed the band in 1992.) Four to five times a year, the Losers pay tribute to a band or songwriter (sometimes two artists in a show down like the next show in February: The Pretenders versus Blondie.) Here's the plan: each night, 20 or more artists spill their guts on one song with the band behind them. Today, The Losers Lounge are brilliantly led by Joe McGinty and David Terhune on lead guitar in the Joe McGinty 7 (Kustard Kings merged into the 7.) The band roster changes a bit but the steadys are: Julian Maile, Jeremy Chatsky, Clem Waldman, Eddie Zweiback, Connie Petruk, Katia Floreska, Tricia Scotti, Claudia Chopek, Garo Yellin, Jeff Hermanson & Eleanor Norton clear your minds of worries with fabulous music at each show. The sensational Nick Danger continues to perform at each show.

My first Losers show at West Beth in 1999 blew me away. I followed the music to Fez under the Time Cafe, and later north across Lafayette Street to Joe’s Pub. Where they go, I go. Don't be a ninny, be a Loser.

My memoir, “I Hate the Dallas Cowboys – tales of a scrappy New York boyhood,” is a great stocking stuffer.

The book is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble and all other online booksellers.

Losers Lounge Hit Me With A Flower ~ They're So Viscious

Losers Lounge kicks ass. If you are in NYC and looking for the best live music show,  it happens four times a year at Joe's Pub.  I attended the Lou Reed Velvet Underground tribute on Thursday and Friday. Took many photos. Here are some of them and if you like, go to Thurs pix or this link for Fri pix to see full albums of each show.

More photos here tomorrow.

This Tuesday, "City Stories: Stoops to Nuts," at Cornelia Street Cafe.  February 11th @ 6pm come listen to Sherryl Marshall, Agatha Nowicki andRegina Ress. Agatha and Regina are telling, and Sherryl is singing her stories in a special showcase set.

Admission is $8 and that includes a free drink. I promise a good time or I'll eat my straw hat.

Time Out Magazine says, "Stoops to Nuts," is a smashing experience not to be missed. No they didn't, but they do say it's a cool thing to do.

Losers Lounge John Lennon Tribute at Joe's Pub

Peter Hess
At The Loser's Lounge tribute to John Lennon on Thursday night at Joe's Pub every artist left a piece of their heart on the stage with their outstanding performance.

Thank you, K.B. Berton for making us welcome in your house. Thank you, Joe McGinty, David Terhune and all the Losers for sending us home with our usual shit eating grins. The Loser's Lounge remains NYC's best live music bang for the buck.

Here's a link to my Loser's Lounge photo album from Thursday's late show.

"And We All Shine On" sang John Lennon one February night in 1970 as I listened to the Scott Muni show on WNEW-FM and first heard "Instant Karma." Lennon's voice and spirit circled the front room of my grandmother's railroad apartment. Life was good, John was back.
